Solar Power – Soaking Up the Sun to Save Money
You’re looking at becoming self-sufficient in your power consumption and usage. Where to begin? For starters, consider one of the most clean and greenhouse gas free energies that there is – the sun. The sun is also renewable. Even if each and every one of us used solar energy to power our homes, there would be more than enough to go around.
PV, or photovoltaics, is what solar energy really is made up of. PV technology creates the energy from solar power. This PV technology uses silicone, which produces voltages when light hits it. The whole idea started out humbly with small devices that were powered by light. Since then solar power has grown widely, and now can power pretty much anything. It is also completely clean.
The idea of solar power has been around for a long time. Albert Einstein discovered it in 1905, and it was demonstrated in 1954 by Bell Laboratories. As early as the 1960s, Nasa began using it to power spacecraft. When homes began using solar power, it was mostly off the grid. It has reached the point now, however, where it can be used both on and off the grid for power.
Solar power goes far beyond just heating water, which uses heat from the sun. It is the use of actual light photons. The PV modules are treated with silicone, which has in turn been treated with doping chemicals. When the light hits the silicone the electrons are freed, meaning they can produce power. As they roll off the silicone wafers they are collected into direct current wires. They have created electricity and can now be converted to power a home.
Homes using solar power can still connect to the grid if they wish. If they need more power they can get it. They can also provide the grid with power, selling back excess electricity they have created to the power company. This is extremely useful in providing themselves with electricity, as well as lowering any other electrical bills they may have.
Regardless of the level of solar power you are expecting to use, certain adaptations to your home will have to be made, so it can run on the power that is produced. Once it has all been set up, though, you will be able to enjoy all the benefits of solar power. Starting with a small project – like versatile and decorative lights for your garden, is a great way to see the benefits of solar power in action without a huge investment. Work up to a larger scheme as you feel ready, and enjoy lower electrical bills, while knowing you are contributing to a cleaner earth for all.
